The building blocks of your army

In Harnoria, your army is made up of seven unit types. Each unit has an attack, defense and health value; they also differ in speed (which sets march time) and carry capacity (which sets how many resources they bring back from gathering and plunder). Each unit is trained in its own building.

Speed 1.0 is the reference infantry. An army always marches at the speed of its slowest unit: add a single siege weapon to an army and the whole army drops to half speed.

💡 Tip: Fill the army you send out to gather resources with siege weapons. With 150 carry per unit they are by far the best gatherers; but they are slow and very fragile in battle.

The counter triangle

Each unit hits some units hard (damage ×1.5) and others weakly (damage ×0.75):

  • Spearman → Cavalry is strong. Cavalry hits spearmen weakly.
  • Cavalry → Archer is strong. Archers hit cavalry weakly.
  • Archer → Infantry (swordsmen and spearmen) is strong. Infantry hits archers weakly.
  • Paladins hit everyone hard (×1.5).
  • Damage to paladins is halved (×0.5): everyone except dragons hits paladins weakly.
  • Dragons hit everyone hard, including paladins.

Counters are weighted by the composition of the enemy army. For example, if most of the army your spearmen hit is cavalry, the multiplier approaches ×1.5; if it is half cavalry and half swordsmen, it stays around ×1.25. That is why scouting the enemy with a spy and building your army accordingly makes a big difference.

Paladins and dragons

The Paladin is an expensive but very powerful elite unit: about as strong as 50 swordsmen. Training one requires food, wood, iron and gold, and the Paladin Hall and the related technology must be unlocked.

The Dragon is the strongest unit in the game; a single dragon is roughly as strong as a hundred paladins, and because it flies, it is the fastest unit. However, dragons are trained only with dragon eggs: each dragon uses up 1 egg from your bag. Eggs drop by chance from damage dealt to Dragon Lairs on the map. If you cancel training, the egg is returned. You also need the Dragon Lair building.

💡 Tip: The dragon is a combat unit. Its carry capacity (100) is lower than a siege weapon's, so sending it to gather is a waste.

Upkeep

Every unit consumes a certain amount of food and gold (wages) per second. Cheap infantry consumes little; a dragon wants 5 food and 6 gold per second. If food or gold runs out, soldiers start to desert, so prepare your economy before building a large army. You also pay the upkeep of guild reinforcement armies stationed in your city (×1.5 the normal amount); details are on the Economy page.

Training capacity

The total army in your city is unlimited, but how many units can be in training at the same time depends on the building's level:

  • Capacity = building level × 20
  • Once the building reaches level 10, capacity is permanently ×2.

A finished unit leaves the queue and frees up space. The Conscription (city) and Muster Grounds (guild) technologies increase this capacity by a percentage. If you select 100 units but only have room or resources for 60, the game starts 60; the button shows how many units will actually be produced.

Building level and training speed technologies also shorten training time.

Special unit: Fortress Guard

🛡️ The Fortress Guard is a special unit that cannot be trained. It is found only in the garrisons of Guild Fortresses on the map and protects the fortress.

It fights in the archer role: it shoots in the first round and behaves like an archer in counters (weak against cavalry, strong against infantry). It is slightly stronger than a normal archer. The guild's army technologies increase the guards' attack, defense and health. When a fortress is captured, its guards recover from zero.

💡 Tip: Add cavalry to your army before attacking a fortress; since the guards fight in the archer role, cavalry deals ×1.5 damage to them.
